It seems no time at all since my inauguration as president back in January 2009, yet already we are into the second year of my term. It is an honour having been chosen to serve as president of SPOA Presidentthe SPOA and I would like to thank you our members in entrusting me with this appointment by giving my views on some of the key issues that I am addressing during my term in office.

The construction industry in Scotland is currently encountering economic conditions more difficult than experienced in the 80’s. My intention during my term in office is to lead our executive committee through this bleak recession in a similar fashion as my predecessors. Hopefully adding to the strength and professionalism of the SPOA.

Not so long ago manufacturers were quoting lengthy delivery times for new equipment, we were struggling to fill seats and hire rates were at a realistic level in return for investment. However, this is no longer the case. The cliff edge drop in new-build housing has created a massive void in our end user market.

In such an environment the temptation is to try and compete for work, with price as the only tool of comparison. I am convinced that nothing can be gained by this route and it will be to the long-term detriment of our customers, businesses, and reputation of our industry. Only with the right level of profit can necessary standards be maintained. People will remember serious health and safety incidents long after they have forgotten about the price of an item of plant, especially where it can be proved that the item of plant was a major factor where a loved one has been maimed or killed due to poor maintenance. Contractors whose margins and completion dates have also been squeezed, to often-unrealistic levels of achievement, should realise that efficient plant with competent operators working safely is more productive and should not forget the old adage where quality, service and safety will be remembered when price is long forgotten.

In the current economic climate it is more important than ever having contractors and plant hirers, working together deriving mutual benefit.

The SPOA has a role for everyone with a vested interest in a successful Scottish Plant Hire Industry. Membership of SPOA is open to those who own, supply, hire, or operate construction plant and equipment and I extend a warm welcome to both old and especially new members wishing to join our association.
