It’s World Suicide Prevention Month

September is World Suicide Prevention Month and whilst you may question why the SPOA is observing this, if you knew that every working day, two construction workers take their own life in the UK and Ireland, then you will understand why we feel it is so important to raise awareness of this issue.

The SPOA has a longstanding relationship with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, the only charity dedicated to the emotional, physical and financial wellbeing of construction workers and their families. Throughout September, the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is running a campaign to raise awareness of suicide and get the message out there that suicide is preventable not inevitable.

Starting the conversation

The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is encouraging everyone to start a conversation, whether it's with your friends, families or your co-workers. By creating an open conversation, we can share experiences and give people the hope and confidence to take action in supporting others.

Here are some tips for having a conversation:

  • Choose a good time and somewhere quiet where there are no distractions.
  • Use open questions that require more than a yes or no answer.
  • Avoid passing judgement or giving your opinion.
  • Encourage your colleague/friend to seek support when they feel ready to do so.
