Member spotlight on AMD Contract Services Ltd

AMD Contract Services Ltd is based in Dumfries and employs between 50 to 60 staff allowing for seasonal peaks.

Albert Munro Dykes started the business in 1967, servicing the agricultural sector. In 1996, Albert or ‘Bert’ as he is better known, passed the mantle to his sons Fraser and Trevor who took over the business and began diversifying into forestry contracting and plant hire as well as continuing to support local agricultural businesses.

Fraser and Trevor continued running AMD Contract Services Ltd together until 2016, when Fraser become the sole proprietor and managing director.

The business has since continued to diversify and has, more recently, invested heavily in equipment and personnel to become a prominent player in the environmental sector, securing major contracts in the thriving peatland restoration sector as well as riverbank repairs and green banking projects.

Achieving the internationally recognised ISO 14001 was a significant milestone for the business and enabled Fraser and the team to tender for big projects in the environmental sector.

What is special about AMD Contract Services?

The company has a very enthusiastic and talented management team, headed up by general manager Stephen Thompson.

The strength of the business lies in having capable and talented people in all areas of the business, from management, operators and drivers to workshop, accounts and administration.

AMD Contract Services also devotes a lot of time and effort to training the next generation, currently employing 10 apprentices covering operatives, workshop and an apprentice quantity surveyor.

What to look out for in 2024

Fraser’s lifelong passion has been motorbikes which led him to form AMD Motorsport in 2017.

A highlight for AMD Motorsport was winning the British Superstock 1000cc Championship last year on a Honda Fireblade with rider Richard Kerr.

Becoming British Champion was a huge achievement and, as well as bringing the business some added recognition, it’s an achievement which Fraser is extremely proud of.

This year AMD Motorsport will continue to support Richard as he competes in the Motoamerica Superstock 1000 in the US.

Closer to home, general manager Stephen Thompson (pictured below) will be competing in the Mull Rally driving his MK11 Escort.
