Vicky had previously been part of the team, from June 2023 to March 2024, before leaving to work as a Contracts Administrator for Xylem Water Solutions. She is now back as the SPOA’s Membership Manager.
Speaking about her return, Vicky says: “I started back with the SPOA on 1st April 2025 - some thought it was an April Fool’s joke! I returned as it was a good opportunity to develop my career and I had enjoyed working with the SPOA members previously.”
Vicky describes her role as follows: “My role is to be the main point of contact for members. All members of the Executive Committee are volunteers and, as such, have limited time. I’m here so that members can always connect with the SPOA, and I can move things forward for them.
“I also deal with all the administration of the membership cycle, from chatting to prospective members, to onboarding them and then ensuring they are getting what they want and need from their SPOA membership. I am also looking at ways to improve membership benefits to ensure they align with the needs of the industry.
“Really my role is to support the Executive Committee to deliver on projects, initiatives and events so that members get a great experience and wish to continue as a SPOA member year on year.”
Vicky is the go-to person - whether it’s about getting a copy of the SPOA Terms and Conditions of Hire, finding a training provider, or hiring the Tenstar simulator for an event, Vicky can help!
Vicky plans to get out and visit members to get a better understanding of their business and how the SPOA can support them. She recently spent some time at the Royal Highland Show where the SPOA simulator was being used for a charity challenge by WM Rose & Sons. This gave her an opportunity to catch up with members who were also exhibiting at the show.
Asked about her favourite thing about working at the SPOA, Vicky responds: “My favourite aspect of my role is supporting a wide and varied membership base. We have members who are just starting out in the industry with a single machine, to huge national businesses with significant fleets and staff. Then we also have our Industry Supplier Members (ISMs) who can help provide our members with great products and services as well as insights on the latest technology and innovations in plant. No two days are the same, which I love.”
Since returning to the SPOA, Vicky has enjoyed catching up with everyone again and also seeing how much the simulator has been out on the road, spreading the word about careers in plant and taking the SPOA to new people.
Vicky highlights the benefits of being a member of the SPOA: “Membership gives you the opportunity to network with other businesses in the industry and discuss the challenges that the plant industry is facing. These forums enable the Executive Committee to work on how best to support its members with those challenges.
“The opportunity to hire the simulator is another fantastic benefit for members, which can help with recruitment or to upskill their current workforce.”
Vicky would like to hear more from members so that she can better support them: “I would be delighted for members to reach out to me with any news or projects they might have. I can help share this news with the membership base or even put it forward for inclusion in our quarterly newsletter, The Sprocket, which is another new initiative that I’ve really enjoyed since returning to the SPOA. I’d also like to invite members to come to our office in Stirling, I’d be happy to get to know members over a cuppa!”
